Lyric:
How ‘bout your son
How ‘bout your daughter
How come it’s always poor folk
Who get shuffled off to slaughter
If you’re so gung ho
Why don’t you just go

In August of ‘05
A mighty voice did rise
She lost her precious son
And it can’t be undone
She went to see the king
A downright simple thing
She thought she’d tell him of
The depth of a mother’s love

How ‘bout your son
How ‘bout your daughter
How come it’s always poor folk
Who get shuffled off to slaughter
If you’re so gung ho
Why don’t you just go
And send us back our sons and our daughters
Send us back our sons and our daughters

Here comes the smear campaign
She must love Saddam Hussein
Well Mr. President
Why are you so hell bent
On keeping up the lie
‘Bout why our soldiers die
What is this noble cause
For which our young march off

How ‘bout your son
How ‘bout your daughter
How come it’s always poor folk
Who get shuffled off to slaughter
If you’re so gung ho
Why don’t you just go
And send us back our sons and our daughters
Send us back our sons and our daughters

So why not answer her
What cause her son died for
If you’re such a regular guy
Just look her in the eye
‘Cause this ain’t make believe
Beware the web you weave
Now go and fix your facts
‘Cause we’ve got Cindy’s back

How ‘bout your son
How ‘bout your daughter
How come it’s always poor folk
Who get shuffled off to slaughter
If you’re so gung ho
Why don’t you just go
And send us back our sons and our daughters
Send us back our sons and our daughters
Send us back our sons and our daughters

Update from Cindy Sheehan

It was just announced at the Rally that Cindy's mother is out of ICU and she will be wrapping up a couple of things and then she will be on her way back home (to Camp Casey)

The fallout from one mom's voice
By Ellen Goodman | August 21, 2005

THE HEADLINE this morning labels her ''peace mom." It's a moniker that simultaneously personalizes and trivializes the lanky woman with the high-pitched voice who has been camping out in Crawford, Texas. It's a shorthand that both grants and diminishes her authority to speak out against the war, a moral authority won the hardest way possible, through the loss of her child.

We are now ending Week Two at Camp Casey. The August phenomenon of 2005 is not shark bites or missing women, but a mother who showed up at the president's vacation doorstep. Cindy Sheehan came impulsively, intemperately to ask the president of the United States why he ''killed" the ''sweet boy" whose brief life span is tattooed on her left ankle: ''Casey '79-'04."

If Week One was the Making of a Celebrity with dawn-to-dusk coverage, Week Two brought the backlash and the bloggers. Conservative cable kings like Bill O'Reilly proved that not even the death of a child grants you immunity from attack. Iconoclast Christopher Hitchens took her on with a glee he once reserved for Mother Teresa.

In Week One, antiwar groups found a face for their cause and promoted Cindy dot-orgs and meet-ups and vigils. In Week Two, prowar supporters have tried to make the war protest all about Cindy. She was dubbed the ''Poster Child for Surrender" and ''America's Most Embarrassing Mother." But, in fact, this woman with a reckless courage born of grief and anger -- ''I'm not afraid of anything since my son was killed" -- directs her challenge to the ''swing voters" of this war. She presents a different image to those uneasy Americans who have so far held their tongues and their doubts out of respect to the war dead and their families.

The activism of ''peace mom" has not made peace in her family. She and her husband grieved in different ways until the announcement: ''Husband of 'Peace Mom' Sues for Divorce." Aunts and uncles on the prowar side of the family criticized her for ''promoting her own personal agenda and notoriety at the expense of her son's good name and reputation."

Indeed, there's no way to know what Casey Sheehan would say about peace or mom. An altar boy who wanted to be a military chaplain's assistant, he ended up a Humvee mechanic and died rescuing injured soldiers. But the split in his family now echoes a split in the American family over how you pay homage to the fallen. Like the mom of fallen Army Spc. Wilfredo Urbina who wants success ''so all this pain will be worth it"? Or like Cindy Sheehan, who tells the president not ''to use my son's name or my name to justify any more killings"?

This war was sold to the public as a matter of self-defense against weapons of mass destruction. But the WMDs never appeared.

Next we were told that Iraq was the front line in the war against terrorists: ''better there than here." But evidence shows that the vast majority of the foreign fighters are not relocated terrorists but new recruits radicalized by the war itself. More recently, we were told to ''stay the course" to ensure democracy in Iraq. But as Iraqis wrangle over a constitution that may not look anything like ours, the list of rationales gets shorter and the support for the war gets weaker.

Taken altogether, the polls show a majority of Americans now believe that it was a mistake to send troops to war, that the results are not worth the loss of American life, and that the war has not made us safer.

The most powerful argument left is the one the president repeats again and again: ''And the best way to honor the lives that have been given in this struggle is to complete the mission."

Enter Cindy Sheehan.

Until now, the rallying cry ''Support Our Troops" meant ''Support the War." One seemed inseparable from another. Criticizing the war felt like criticizing the troops. But on a dusty, hot road in Texas, Sheehan worked to sever this link.

So the question is not whether the president will talk with her. He won't. It's not whether she speaks for her son. We'll never know. It's not whether she is ''just a mom" or an anti-Bush agitator. She's both. It's whether nearly 1,900 Americans died in a war of choice and how painful that is to acknowledge. It's whether we go on quietly honoring those deaths with more deaths.

No wonder ''peace mom" has become a target of the war over the war. If she succeeds, the White House has lost perhaps the final and most powerful justification they offer a disheartened American public. At that point, there's no way out of the Iraq muddle. Except out.

More than one 'Gold Star' out there...

The tragedy of the far left's appropriation of a grieving mother of a dead soldier is the inevitable politicalization of all grief-wracked parents of war dead. We're seeing that now. Columnist Maureen Dowd solemnly declares that the moral authority of a Gold Star parent is absolute. But she assigns that authority only to Sheehan. What of the others?

5:41 PM

Anonymous said...

Moral authority is about to have a showdown in Crawford, Texas, where the parents of soldiers in Iraq will square off in the heat-shimmering periphery of President George W. Bush's averted gaze.

Cindy Sheehan, the bereaved mother who has gained international attention by posting herself outside the Bush ranch and demanding a (second) meeting with the president in the wake of her son's death, is about to have company of a different sort.

Not the supporters she's grown accustomed to - television crews, anti-war demonstrators, Democratic consultants and America's political left - but a small cavalry of opponents who feel as morally engaged about the war as she does.

Every movement has its backlash, and now Cindy Sheehan is getting her turn. Her sudden departure from Crawford to tend to her ailing mother in California changes only the characters in place, not the nature of confrontation.

On Aug. 27, a caravan of military families who support the war in Iraq is scheduled to arrive in Crawford. The backlash battalion, which is calling itself the "You Don't Speak For Me, Cindy" tour, is starting in San Francisco Monday and is composed of parents whose sons and daughters are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Among those leading the caravan is Deborah Johns of Northern California Marine Moms, whose son, William, is a Marine in Iraq. Her sentiments are typical of other military families who sympathize with Sheehan but feel she's hurting others.

"I am deeply sorry for Ms. Sheehan's loss," said Johns, who also is starring in a commercial she is producing. "However, Ms. Sheehan's actions are only causing pain to those of us who have loved ones serving in the war against terrorism."

There are plenty of others like Johns, apparently. Blogger Arthur Chrenkoff ( http://chrenkoff.blogspot.com/2005/08/other-ways-to-grieve.html ) has compiled a list of equally bereaved parents who have lost children in Iraq, but who hold a different perspective.

Some of those critical of Sheehan feel that her public display is damaging to military morale and, therefore, dangerous to those still serving. Others have said she dishonors her son, who not only joined the military voluntarily, but who re-enlisted in August 2003, five months into Operation Iraqi Freedom. Whatever his mother may feel, Casey Sheehan apparently was not ignorant of the risks he faced.

Nevertheless, her message resonates with those who oppose the war. Sheehan has put a face on loss and provided an icon for dissenters. Strolling through Camp Casey, named for her son, she gets hugs and has her picture taken with new friends, prompting her to say she knows how Mickey Mouse feels at Disneyland.

Her sudden fame has also brought pain. Celebrity is often a harsh light, and Sheehan also is learning what all public people learn: The madding crowd is often vicious.

Despite the furor she has helped spawn, Sheehan says she's "willing to put up with cr-- if it ends the war a minute sooner than it would have."

Whatever she may mean by the "cr--," surely she isn't referring to other parents who have suffered equally but who disagree with her.

One such parent, Ronald R. Griffin, whose son, Spc. Kyle Andrew Griffin, was killed May 30, 2003, wrote eloquently in Thursday's Wall Street Journal:

"I lost a son in Iraq and Cindy Sheehan does not speak for me," he began. "I grieve with Mrs. Sheehan, for all too well I know the full measure of the agony she is forever going to endure. I honor her son for his service and sacrifice. However, I abhor all that she represents and those who would cast her as the symbol for parents of our fallen soldiers."

Griffin directed some of his commentary to New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who wrote that Sheehan, because she had buried a child, had "absolute moral authority" in the debate about the war. Absolute moral authority is a tricky standard these days.

Must one be a veteran or have a child in the military to countenance war? Does losing a son give one greater moral authority than those whose children survive?

Griffin writes: "How can we all possess 'absolute moral authority' when we hold so many different perspectives? I don't want that title. I haven't earned that title."

No human being has absolute moral authority on this or any other issue, though I think I know what Dowd meant. That parents who bury their children have a right to complain and to have their voices heard. That's the theory, anyway.

In practice, of course, it means that people lost in their emotions get a pass from the usual standards of debate and fair play, as Sheehan has. That's about to change. As others arrive in Crawford who share Sheehan's grief and her moral authority - but not her politics - her free pass expires.

Attention Knights of the Rock 'n Roll Table. I miss you already...

Fish here, reporting in from home. Funny how it almost doesn't feel like home anymore!

To all of you that haven't been able to make it to Camp Casey, your spirits were with us as we gathered round the table late at night w/ the guitars, candles, Cindy stones, cold beverages - Lone Star one night, Tecate the next!!!

Earlier this morning I was sitting on my porch drinking coffee, watching the horses, and reading all the quotes on the "Peace Cooler". Special thanks to Ian(the longest rant), and all others who contributed their thoughts. Whoever thought that a cold beer and a black sharpie could mean so much?

I hope to see all of you soon. I'll try to bring enough bail money for all of us...

Keep the fire burning!

To all Round Table Patriots (you know who you are) poor Dot was almost to tears last night, but called today and told me things were much better.

BUT...

She misses us all so if you have her number please call...she may not get the call immediately because of reception issues, so leave her a message please...it would mean a lot to her...she is the only Round Table Patriot left at Camp Casey II and is holding down the fort. Although she is rubbing elbows with Joan Baez so life does not suck!

Thanks to Bily, Mari and Sweet Kim for leaving their tent for others to use...very kindly of you.

Please email soon and let us know what has happened since you have returned home...and about your plans to return (come on...we KNOW you all just can't STAND being away from us) LOL!

Round Table Warriors! Damn, I like the sound of that.

"Vive la Revolucion" they cried between toasts and protest songs...

So good to see everyone reporting in. Damn it's wrong to be here instead of there. A hell of a lot cooler, but not quite right, huh?

So I spent the first part of the day negociating with the rental company about the scratches. You know it's a Red State so they weren't really going for the -

"Hey, Mr. Corporate Man, we were forced to park in a ditch with shrubs and fire ants and I guess that's just the kind of shit that happens when you're living in an oppressive, dictatorial, anti-free loving American type..." --- and he really wasn't tryin' to hear it.
Guess I'll get that estimate later...

In the meantime, spent the rest of the day making copies of Jessie's song and leaving it with friends. I think the moments shared at the round table with this song must signify something. We all knew it was 'meant to be' the first time we sang it together.

I'm gonna link it to Buzzflash and some of my regular sites. You guys should do the same. It could be one of the sounds behind a movement.

You never know! When you think of some of the best musical protest moments in history, it usually wasn't planned that way.

I've got all of Jessie's contact info for those 'Knights' that may need it. The song is great, the cause is right, and it made us cry...

Might even make Jessie famous.

Gotta go, time to pick up the kids...

Brethren

Days ago they were but strangers,
Hearing the cry of one mother’s tears
Heeding the call of all humanity…
What is left of it in this world.

Days ago they were but strangers,
Living lives of corrosive regret
All the while yearning to be heard
Above the deafening silence of apathy.

Days ago they were but strangers,
But by chance or cosmic fate
Did they arrive at the center of the Universe
To outstretched arms of hope and faith.

Days ago they were but strangers,
Now finding strength and inner calm
Within the hearts and souls of Brethren
Forever bound as one for Peace.

Hey there! I'm finally on. Damn, I stunk so bad I couldn't stand myself. I had to shower first. I'm staying at the glamorous Weston Inn in McGregor. Still haven't found my credit card, but the Peace House was so kind to put me up in a room tonight. Yessss. Guess I must have looked pretty damn whooped. I was in dire need of an iced-cold room tonight. Ahhhhhhh.

Jesse is going to perform live on the BradBlog tomorrow. Don't know the time. For the past 2 years, I've blogged on the BradBlog under the alias of TaterSalad. I heard that Brad was forgoing his vacation to head to Crawford. He arrived on Sunday night / Monday morning @ 2:00 a.m. Of course, I had to talk to Brad and he asked me to send any interesting people and stories his way. First person I thought of was Jesse and "Sons and Daughters". Brad said he'll put him on tomorrow ... EXCELLENT! This song will be a hit.

I miss y'all so very much. It is very, very lonely down here. Well, only in the wee hours. Last evening it was just Mary Ellen and I sitting around a table with no music, no singing, nothing ... boring. After the b*tch complained about my smoking under the tent, I just pulled up a chair outside my tent, finished my beer and had one more smoke.

Hurry back. I need some love!!!

Broke down and grabbed a "warm" beer out of my car ... I had picked up three cases Monday ... and am now enjoying beer on the rocks. Might soothe my pain. Can't make it much worse.

Hey Kim! Thanks for calling again. I'll see if I can find a picture to download. If not, I don't mind being known in name only. I much prefer being behind the camera instead of in front of it.

FISH, where did you go? When did you leave? Why no good-byes? Will ya be back. Hope so.

BILY, miss you, too. Thanks for the voicemail message. I'll keep audioblogging as events occur. Hadi seems to think that we're going to have problems with the freepers this weekend. Hey Ian, didn't get to comment on the poem...incredibly to the point!

What a great piece of work. Wonder if I can fit it on the cooler somewhere...?

There's still some space. I'm thinking about writing down the comments and posting them for others to see. Probably won't change the world, but should bring back a few memories for those Round Table Warriors in attendance.

Kim, get in touch with me so I can get some of the pics that were taken around the table. There's one close-up of the Cindy/Casey stones, the candle, your hat, and James' 'No War' shirt in the background. Did it turn out?

I'm gonna go ahead and post this email address to you guys:

catfishcooper0420@yahoo.com

Normally I wouldn't do this on an open board, but I figure the SS already got all my personal info the night they got pulled out of the ditch!!! LMAO!

Stay in touch,
Fish

Hey Fish!

Lokken shook her leg and looked longingly at me when I scratched her back...she says, "Rank Rhoo Rish"...(Thank you in Great Dane)

We were wondering where you swam off to...and thanks...the words just flow because of the honesty and integrity and truth of the group...you peeps are just so inspiring to me, each in your own wonderful way.

Oh, and Fish...don't think you are getting off the hook that easy buddy...if at all possible, please come back...all the screaming meanies (well most) will be out of the picture or quite insignificant and this weekend promises to be exceptionally wonderful. Miss you man.

WHOO HOO! I am taking off Thursday and Friday to get back down to Camp Casey for the weekend!

Kim or Bily, if you talk to Dit Dot (her new knick kname) please tell her I will call her when I get off work this evening, still trying to figure out if I can make it tonight...but I am feeling the gravity pulling me back BIG TIME!

Ice, Fan, Wine for Whitney (peace offering) and Lokken...thats all I need...oh, and the rest of the Round Table Warriors to join all at Camp Casey II...All for one and one for All!!!

Just an FYI.

Attention Round Table Warriors!

First off to Kim, thanks for the pics, will look at them next. In the meantime this is what I've been up to today...

Remember how we told Jesse he might be famous before he gets home? Here's a copy of an email I've been shooting around the globe today:

August 23, 2005

Sons and Daughters - written and performed by Jesse Dyen

Just returned from Camp Casey in Crawford, TX! I am sad to report, and this should come as no surprise, that some news coverage of this event is still biased when it comes to reporting the amount of people that are down there. There are more than a hundred permanent campers and the visitors have numbered in the thousands!

Camp Casey II is now in full swing. For those of you that do not know, this area was offered by a relative of the man who was firing his gun in the air close to where we were camped in the ditches. I would imagine he's still upset about that!

Also, the tent being used - including the chairs, tables, and kitchen are the same one that Mr. Bush used for his fundraiser that he attended when they passed by Camp Casey twice in one day. How ironic that they charged $2,000 a plate for the Chickenhawk, and we're now serving thousands for free.

I have attached a link to the song "Sons and Daughters" written and performed by Jesse Dyen of Oakland, CA. This was one of our late night 'Round Table Warriors' songs and quickly became the unofficial ‘theme song’ of the Camp.

http://www.crawfordorbust.com/Sons%20and%20Daughters.wma

The song is incredible and Jesse has given permission to distribute freely. Please spread this song around. Some of the greatest protest songs in history were never planned that way. This could be one of those songs...

I also highly recommend the sites www.meetwithcindy.org and also www.crawfordorbust.com for some great on-site pictures and audio blogs.

Thanks to the millions of you that have supported Cindy Sheehan and the rest of the Gold Star Mothers for Peace! I know their heart is with each and every one of you that support this movement.

No More Lies.
No More Lives.

Fish -
Texarkana, TX

.......hopefully there will be others with it stuck in their head all day long......

I am only a Fish. Still, I grok the fullness of our action!

Thanks for the update Dot!!! I saw they were building it (the helipad) and getting a bike for the king to ride if he shows. Ha ha! When he leaves though, we'll all have to tell his highness "he wears no clothes' since none of his cronies will!

Hey Guys-

I'm in DC saying "bye, bye" to my brother, who's headed to Iraq in October. I, too, wish I could be there this weekend. I have encouraged everyone I meet to go if they have the ability.

Hey, could someone tell me how Cindy reacted to Jesse's song...

Be sure to keep me posted. I check this blog like three times a day now. I simply can't NOT think about Crawford. I truly wish I could be there.

Good night, Knights...

The Sunrise Report (sort of) from Camp Casey II

Mornin' All! I am very happy to hear that Native and Madam will be joining us in Crawford.

Well once again the Credo is enacted in full force:

1. Shoot self in foot.
2. Reload.
3. Shoot self in other foot.
4. Repeat.

The Movement has been hi-jacked.

It is no longer all Americans welcome.

The threats of arrest and banishment keep coming from the "leadership" for those that do not fall lock and goose-step in line with the ever tightenening restrictions driven by the "political consultannts and lawyers" who think they know it all.

Willie Nelson and Jackson Brown were to perform in solidarity with Cindy, but the powers that opress have BLOWN it and said, "No big name acts". As in our plight to restore America...the enemy is within our government and is now controlling the movement.

Al Sharpton, however, is to hold a prayer meeting with Cindy.

One good thing...

Bill Moyers will be here to interview Cindy and report on the movement at 10:00 pm CST please check your local listings on HBO or Showtime I think.

Any who are coming to Crawford please listen up!

The police have decreed that because of the massive numbers expected this weekend, the roads will be closed to vehicular traffic. However, shuttles will be either going to CC I or CCII in order to avoid predicted confrontations with Bush Supporters. Please just take the shuttle to Camp Casey II and Lokken and I will greet you with open arms...and cold bottled water.

The Today show broadcast live this morning and Cindy is at this moment holding her daily press briefing.

George and Laura Bush have been invited to the BBQ that will be held at Camp Casey II tomorrow.

Here is your chance W...be a man.

ROFLMAO!!! Sorry...I could not even blog that with a straight face much less say it!

I'll be checking in periodically throghout the day with further reports.

Here is to a peaceful and enlightening weekend.

Peace and Good Will to all.

Still Hopefilled in Crawford,

Ian =]

I was moved by your heartfelt lyric. It IS "always poor folk who get shuffled off to slaughter".

Would you post your song or songs on soundclick? Our protest songs do very well on that site and we get down on King George pretty bad ourselves.
Search: Hillbilly Democrats MP3
Download your song on the free music sites and we'll help promote it.
Great song!

We saw this one on the Crawford site:

I'm an American Veteran (Infantry Hospital Corpsman, USMC/USN) and a songwriter opposed to Bush's war. 2100 empty chairs today and more each day until America wakes up. Please feel free to share my links with a Bush fan or two.

I was at Camp Casey 2 when this song was sung live. I have to say, it's a beautiful song, but it's even more emotional and meaningful when the families of fallen soldiers are on stage with Jesse.
